The work depicting the bust of a young girl covered by the rich cloak with hood that wraps her shoulders is the work of the Tuscan sculptor Ezio Ceccarelli. He was born in Montecatini in Val di Cecina on 27 July 1865 to a family of humble origins. From his father, who went to live in Florence, he was first placed in the office of the lawyer Oreste Ciampi, who saw in the boy a greater inclination for drawing and art than for quotations and legal acts, and he stayed in the studio of the sculptor Ulisse Cambi, where Ceccarelli stayed for a year, then enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts, knowing the professor Augusto Rivalta. At 18 he exhibited for the first time in the halls of the Florentine Promoter a bust entitled: "After the rebuke", which was purchased by Mr Soria of Livorno; later he modeled two figurines for the Lapins entitled: "The choice of a flower" and "The complacency", which are currently in London. He then made a figure, entitled "Hours of leisure", with the slender and elegant line, representing a little girl, who after the work of the row took the rock on her shoulders and dropped the spindle, with which a kitten jokingly, while she smiles. This was liked by many artists and the prolacked commissions and praises. At the Promoter of 1891 he exhibited a bust entitled: "Without work", which was judged by the Rivalta and the local press as a very fine work in form and feeling. He then modeled a figurette for the Fanfani and Natali, who sold it to Antonio Frilli, and then took part in the competition for the artistic retirement in Rome, organized by the Ministry of EducationHe exhibited his works in many European capitals, from Saint Petersburg to Munich, Brussels, Liège, London, Dublin, Barcelona and Paris. He was also present with his works at four editions of the Venice Biennale. In his Parisian visits he was able to meet the now famous French sculptor Auguste Rodin and appreciate his artistic concept, of which he was a staunch supporter. Many of its sculptures worthy of note: the monument of Garibaldi in the homonymous square of Massa; that of Cavour in the Padua town of Este; the monument of the South American patriot Josè Gervasio Artigas in the Uruguayan city of Paysandù; that of Christopher Columbus in La Plata in Argentina; a bust of Giosuè Carducci at San Miniato al Tedesco; the «Angel of death» preserved in the Galleria di Palazzo Pitti; a famous «Ecce Homo» which was so successful that the author decided to entrust the reproduction in series to the Ghiozzi Manufacture in Florence. Important his creations are also present in museums and private collections; particularly rich of his works is the collection of the heirs of the merchant Luigi Martini, fervent admirer of the art of Ezio Ceccarelli, of which he was for years the most loyal client, and who, after his death, took over all the remaining production in his renowned Florentine workshop. In December 2004, the exhibition «Two Sculptors and a Monument» dedicated to the restoration was held at the Ducal Palace of Massa by the students of the local Art Institute "Felice Palma", of the monument to Garibaldi modeled by Ezio Ceccarelli and executed in 1906 by Fernando Tombesi in the famous laboratory Cuturi di Massa.
